BOOK REVIEW
Thank you to @coloredpages and @netgalley for this copy of The Awakening of Malcolm X. As a reader and as a Muslim reader, I empathized with Malcolm X’s story. He got into the Nation of Islam first, before leaving that for Islam. The main difference is that Nation of Islam follows Elijah, whereas Muslims believe there is ONE god (Allah) and that Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W) is the last messenger/prophet. Another difference is that the Nation of Islam was founded around 1930, but Islam was founded way before that.
Overall, I enjoyed reading about Malcolm X’s life again.He questions the social justice system, Nation of Islam, and everything he’s been through. He went through trial after trial and in the end, he found Islam. I loved reading about how he came to that point in his life and all the obstacles he overcame to get to that point.

2. Punching the Air by IBI ZOBOI AND YUSUF ISLAM
I was lucky enough that I got to hear Dr.Yusef Salaam at a Princeton University event that was open to the public. I’m not normally a fan of poety, but this is one poetry book you don’t want to miss! Punching the Air follows 16-year old Amal Shahid and how he is convicted of a crime that he didn’t commit. He’s sent to prison and it turns his life upside down. Dr. Yusuf Salaam was just 15 years-old when he was one of the wrongfully convicted boys from the “Central Park Jogger” case. Their stories are told in the film “When They See Us” by Ava DuVernay.
3. Betty Before X by Ilyasah Shabazz and Dr. Betty Shabazz with Renee Watson
This takes place in 1945 Detroit and it’s inspired by Dr. Betty’s real life. It’s told by her daughter, Ilysah Shabazz, Dr. Betty Shabazz, and Renee Watson! It’s before she met Malcolm X.
4. Becoming by Michelle Obama
“In sharing my story, I hope to help create space for other stories and other voices, to widen the pathway for who belongs and why.” -Former First Lady Michelle Obama. Michelle also has a podcast. When I read this book, I got to get a glimpse into all the milestones in Michelle Obama’s life.
5. A Promised Land by Barack Obama
Readers will get a glimpse into Former President Obama’s thoughts when he was running for office to some of the toughest decisions he had to make as President. “If I remain hopeful, it’s because I’ve learned to place my faith in my fellow citizens, especially those of the next generation!”
